Funders are beginning to ask a sharper question: which organizations use AI responsibly, practically, and in service of the mission?

Almost no one is ready. 92% of nonprofits already use AI, but only 7% say it's meaningfully advancing their mission. Nova Linden closes that gap with: the strategy, governance, and change management that let mission-driven organizations do more good without losing what makes them human. The tools are there. The transformation isn't. Yet.

Most nonprofits hit an efficiency plateau: faster on routine tasks, but no closer to the mission. Nova Linden helps leaders break through it.

"It's not about adopting AI for its own sake. It's about using every available tool to do more good, with your people in the driver's seat, your values intact, and human judgment always in command."

— Jaime Zapata, Founder

What it looks like in practice

A policy organization where federal government-relations staff automatically see what state teams discussed with legislators. Nobody walks into a Hill meeting blind.

A CEO who starts every morning with a brief, generated overnight, of what's moving across every office and team.

AI woven into how the organization actually works, not sitting in individual chat windows.

From efficiency plateau to mission impact

Speed on routine tasks is just the start. We help AI serve your mission across the whole organization, not just a handful of enthusiasts.

Your people do the irreplaceable work

Judgment, relationships, creativity, moral courage: the work AI can't do, and where your mission actually lives. AI's highest value isn't the tasks it completes; it's the human potential it frees up.

A partner to your whole leadership team, including legal and IT

We work with your legal counsel and IT teams, never around them. Our job is to help everyone speak the same language and move in the same direction.

Investment that pays for itself

Done well, AI frees up staff time, vendor spend, and overhead you can reinvest in your mission. We help you plan those shifts so your board, your funders, and your CFO can say yes with confidence.

What We Believe

People are irreplaceable. The right AI makes them more so, never less.

We're not here to automate your organization. We're here to put powerful tools in capable human hands, so your people lead with more range, more judgment, and more impact.

Human judgment leads

AI informs, accelerates, and scales the work. The decisions that matter stay with your people: what's right, what's worth doing, who you serve.

The mission sets the terms

We're loyal to no platform. If a tool doesn't advance your mission and protect your values, it doesn't belong in your organization.

Adoption that elevates people

Done well, AI clears away the routine so your team can do the irreplaceably human work: judgment, relationships, creativity, and leadership no model can replicate.

Mission-driven leaders collaborating in Washington DC

Whole-organization AI integration, built around your mission and your people.

We don't impose a playbook. We build one with you, at the leadership level, grounded in where you are and focused on where you're trying to go.

Nearly half of nonprofits have no AI governance policy. We build the policies, privacy safeguards, and compliance frameworks you need, in partnership with your legal counsel and IT teams.

Leadership Capacity & Change Management

The hard part, and the part most AI consultants skip. We equip your senior team to lead adoption with clarity and authority, so decision making stays human-centered at every level.

Leadership Development

Five dimensions. One honest picture.

Every engagement begins with the Nova Linden AI Readiness Assessment: a structured look across the five dimensions that determine whether AI takes root or stalls.

  • Leadership Literacy & Appetite
  • Workflow Opportunity
  • Staff Culture & Readiness
  • Governance & Policy Readiness
  • Mission Alignment
Nova Linden AI READINESS ASSESSMENT Leadership Literacy & Appetite Workflow Opportunity Staff Culture & Readiness Governance & Policy Readiness Mission Alignment

The Nova Linden AI Readiness Assessment™

AI integration, made concrete.

Not tools for their own sake. This is what thoughtful integration makes possible: hours returned to mission, risk brought under governance, and people brought along.

Illustrative scenarios: your starting point, and your results, will be your own.

Leadership & Governance

A confident answer to the AI strategy question

Mid-meeting, a funder asks: "What's your AI strategy?" Your CEO walks through a 90-day roadmap tied to mission outcomes: which work AI absorbs, which decisions stay human, where the savings go.

AI readiness is becoming a marker of maturity in funders' eyes. Be the grantee who can answer.
Programs

Giving caseworkers their hours back

Caseworkers dictate notes; AI structures them into required documentation for human review. Five or more hours per caseworker, per week, return to face-to-face client time.

The "stay more human" dividend, made literal.
Fundraising

First drafts that start at 70%

A two-person development team trains AI on their own past proposals and program data. New LOIs begin as strong drafts, not blank pages. Turnaround drops from three weeks to one.

More shots on goal, without more staff.
Communications

Rapid response, actually rapid

A policy change drops at 9 a.m. By 10, your team has a synthesized brief and a draft statement in your leader's voice. You're quoted in the day's coverage, not the follow-up story.

Shape the narrative instead of chasing it.
Policy & Advocacy

Fifty-state tracking with a small policy team

AI monitors legislation and regulations across every state and delivers a weekly digest to your team, flagging what matters for the communities you serve.

Monitoring capacity that once required a team ten times the size.
Equity & Access

Language access at the speed of need

An organization serving a dozen language communities pairs AI translation with review by bilingual staff. Every program update now goes out in every language, every time.

Equity becomes operational, not aspirational.
People & Change

From "AI will replace us" to "we built this"

Paying for AI tools alone doesn't create adoption. A facilitated process where staff co-design where AI helps turns quiet reluctance into ownership.

Change management, not software, is the missing ingredient. That's the work Nova Linden leads.

One path. Four doors.

Four phases, from first diagnosis to organization-wide adoption. Take the full arc, or exactly the piece you need now.

Strengthen your whole portfolio, not one grantee at a time.

Funders are asking how their grantees will deliver in an AI-shaped decade. Nova Linden designs portfolio-wide readiness programs: assessing where grantees stand, building governance and capacity, and reporting back what your investment produces.

Talk with us about your portfolio

The first conversation is exploratory, and it's free.

The bridge between leadership vision and AI reality.

We understand both sides of the table: the executive pressure to move on AI, and the organizational realities that determine whether adoption succeeds.

30+ years working at the leadership level

From the federal government and major national foundations to labor organizations and advocacy campaigns, we've spent our careers alongside leaders of organizations that exist to make a difference.

Rigorous, current AI expertise

Certified across Anthropic's full AI curriculum, plus Microsoft, Google, and AWS. Vendor-neutral by design. We speak credibly with your IT team, and translate fluently for your board.

Fluency in how mission-driven organizations work

We know the stakeholder dynamics, governance realities, and deeply held values that shape mission-driven organizations, and what it takes to lead change inside them.

Small, senior, and fully present

Intentionally boutique: you work directly with us, and you're never handed off to junior staff or to AI. Every client gets the firm's full attention, honest counsel, and commitment.

We work with organizations where the mission is the point.

We partner with CEOs, executive directors, and senior teams at organizations that are ready to move, and with the funders investing in AI readiness across their grantee portfolios.

Jaime Zapata

Founder & Principal

Three decades at the intersection of public purpose, leadership, and strategic communications.

For more than 30 years, Jaime has helped mission-driven organizations tell stories that move people: as a Partner at GMMB and co-founder of its Catalyst practice, at the American Federation of Teachers, across federal government, and most recently leading digital channels at the Gates Foundation.

That background matters because AI adoption is not primarily a technical decision. It is a leadership, trust, and change management challenge. Jaime founded Nova Linden to answer a new question: how do thoughtful organizations integrate AI without losing what makes them effective?

His conviction is simple: the organizations doing the most good deserve the tools and guidance to do even more, without compromising who they are.

Gaby Gomez

Partner & Lead Consultant

Three decades at the intersection of policy, advocacy, and mission-driven leadership.

For 30 years, Gaby has shaped policy and advocacy for entities working to expand opportunity across America: as Executive Vice President for Policy, Advocacy, and Communications at Strada Education Foundation, in nearly a decade at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, leading two offices at the U.S. Department of Education, and in senior roles on the House Committee on Education and Labor and at the American Federation of Teachers.

At Nova Linden, Gaby brings that experience to a question she sees mission-driven leaders grapple with: how do the organizations doing the most good adopt AI in ways that strengthen, rather than dilute, the relationships, culture, and judgment that make their work matter? She partners with CEOs, executive directors, and senior teams on the human side of that work, change management, stakeholders, and communications, where adoption either takes root or stalls.

A first-generation college student and Pell Grant recipient, Gaby holds a B.A. in political science from Loyola Marymount University and a master's in education policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is a fellow of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute and recipient of its Medallion of Excellence, and has served on the board of Hispanics in Philanthropy and as a Regent for LMU.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nova Linden is an AI integration consulting firm for CEOs and senior leaders of nonprofits, foundations, and cause-driven organizations. We help them build the culture, governance, and leadership capacity to integrate AI across the whole organization, so it meaningfully advances the mission, not just routine tasks.

Nonprofits, foundations, trade associations, labor organizations, advocacy groups, and mission-driven companies. We partner with CEOs, executive directors, and senior leadership teams ready to move beyond experimentation and build something lasting.

Most AI consultants come from technology and don't understand mission-driven organizations. Most organizational consultants understand people and change but lack rigorous AI expertise. Nova Linden sits at that rare intersection: two principals with complementary depth in strategic communications and in policy and advocacy, both shaped by senior roles at the Gates Foundation, paired with current AI fluency certified across Anthropic, Microsoft, Google, and AWS. We work at the CEO level, and we lead the change management that makes adoption stick. That's the hard part, and the part most AI consultants skip.

No. We work with organizations at every stage, from just beginning to explore AI to already using it but stuck at individual experimentation. Our process starts with an honest assessment of where you actually stand.

Many staff are unknowingly using consumer AI tools that may use submitted data for model training, exposing donor records, member information, or proprietary research in ways leadership hasn't authorized. Nova Linden helps you understand which tools are appropriate for which types of data, configure enterprise-level privacy protections, and build staff policies that protect sensitive information without blocking productive use. Every recommendation is developed with your legal counsel and IT teams, grounded in your compliance requirements.

As a trusted partner, not a workaround. Legal counsel brings essential expertise on compliance, liability, and data governance; IT understands the infrastructure and security realities. Nova Linden translates between strategic leadership goals and technical or legal requirements, so AI adoption is both ambitious and sound.

It deserves a direct answer. AI will change the work people do: some tasks will shrink, some roles will evolve. But our approach rests on a clear principle: AI is most valuable when it amplifies your people, not when it replaces them. The opportunity for most mission-driven organizations isn't to cut staff; it's to redeploy human capacity from routine work toward the strategic, relational, and creative work only people can do. We help leaders plan that shift honestly, and communicate it well to staff, boards, and the people you serve.

Yes. Grantees' ability to deliver on mission increasingly depends on how thoughtfully they adopt AI, and most need support to get there. Nova Linden partners with foundations on portfolio-wide readiness programs: assessing where grantees stand, building governance and capacity, and reporting back what the investment produces.

Nova Linden is based in Washington, DC, with a presence in New York and Los Angeles. We work with organizations across the United States, in person when it matters and remotely when it doesn't.

You already know this matters. Let's find the next step together.

The first conversation is about you: where your organization stands, what's at stake, and what the next practical step should be. We'll listen, then decide together whether Nova Linden is the right partner.
